Wastewater Odor Control in collection systems
|
Municipalities and water districts today are extremely sensitive to odor complaints from the local community. Complaints of “sewer gas” odors are generally associated with the foul smelling hydrogen sulfide gas produced by bacteria processing waste in the Anaerobic condition. This formation of aqueous hydrogen sulfide is commonly referred to as dissolved sulfide. Some of the dissolved sulfides then leave the aqueous phase to form gaseous hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The quantity of dissolved sulfides that are released into the gaseous phase depends primarily the age or time of the bio mass operating in the anaerobic condition, the turbulence of the wastewater flow, which generally increases as the wastewater is discharged from a force main into a gravity flow line. This gas becomes a serious odor problem at the next downstream manhole where it can escape into the surrounding community. It is common to measure H2S levels in these manholes in excess of 30 parts per million (ppm), and occasionally exceeding 1,000 ppm. |
In concentrations as low as 10 ppm, the gas can cause nausea and headaches. At more than 100 ppm, the H2S gas can cause eye injury, conjunctivitis, respiratory tract irritation, loss of smell and death. Clearly, it is important to humans to have the formation of H2S minimized. Our products are extremely effective in dramatically reducing or eliminating overall hydrogen sulfide levels in collections and processing systems . The amount of the dosage required is a function of the sewage parameters. Normal sewage generally requires dosage of BioMagic 500 in the 20 PPM neighborhood. To see OdorLog data, go to Odor log data Please note that dosing with BioMagic 500 was started on 6-23-2006. Note that the H2S was eliminated as the bio mass was converted to the Aerobic condition. |

ODOR CONTROL IS IMPORTANT, BUT ELIMINATING CORROSION IS A REAL COST SAVINGS.
|
The presence of hydrogen sulfide gas is not only a nuisance and potential health hazard to humans, it can also cause severe damage to the collection system infrastructure. Hydrogen sulfide gas, when combined with water, produces sulfuric acid and the effect of sulfuric acid on concrete surfaces in the sewer environment can be devastating. Sewer lines, pump stations, and collection interceptors fail structurally because of concrete corrosion caused by sulfuric acid. Concrete is not the only material that can be affected by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulfide gas. Most metals present in the infrastructure of collection systems can also be attacked and destroyed by exposure to sulfuric acid. This might mean missing rungs on manhole steps, corroded and weakened manhole covers and rings or severe corrosion to pumps and metal pipe and fittings. |
The absence of acid protects Pumps and the equipment used to handle sewage
Our products eliminates these problems. Applying our products via a simple chemical injection pump in the lift station wet wells, eliminates the existing dissolved sulfides to produce harmless by products and nitrogen gas while also providing bacteria with the necessary nutrients and oxygen to prevent any further formation of hydrogen sulfides. Our products are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, require no special handling or storage and are extremely cost-effective. Lines treated with BioMagic 500 do not normally require the cleaning or Jetting. The reduction of infrastructure maintenance and the reduction of line clogs reduce overall operational cost |

The sludge that remains after processing must be disposed of as generated or else the sludge would inundate the processing plant with time. Sludge that is the product of non contaminated sewage may be used as a fertilizer where permitted. Major cities that collect sewage from industrial sources as well as residential sewage generally do not have farm land as a place where sludge may be distributed. The disposal of sludge from anaerobic or Co-Generation plants is more sever that the aerobic plants as the aerobic processing system produces less sludge than the Co-Generation systems. The disposal of the sludge, along with the cost of H2S collection and removal can exceed the cost savings of the methane produced in the Co-Generation plant. Aerobic processing plants depend on the compression of large quantities of air for bubbling through the bio mass or other methods of injecting air into the bio mass, such as pumping the liquid up into the air (Water fall effect) and allowing the falling liquid to aerate. Achieving the desired quantity of Dissolved Oxygen (DO)can be a challenge and engineers have pushed aeration technology to achieve the level of DO desired. The best technology is limited by the ability of the bio mass to absorb and hold DO. Temperature of the bio mass is a huge factor in the ability to inject DO into a bio mass. BioMagic 500 solves the problem as follows: |
1...The BioMagic 500 Bio Stimulant is a non hazardous liquid that is Ph neutral and when injected into a bio mass, mixes through out the bio mass, allowing the bio mass to become aerobic top to bottom. 2....The desire oxygen level for the bacteria is adjusted by varying the dosage rate. The oxygen available to the bacteria may be set to be the equivalent of the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) or more oxygen than is possible with DO. Higher levels of available oxygen will produce a euphoric condition in bacteria that has been called Hyper active. Over dosing will supply an excess of oxygen that could create a harmfull disinfectant condition. The dosing rate for the BioMagic 500 is adjusted to neutralize the sulfides present and to supply the oxygen necessary to retain the aerobic state for the desired digestion time. 3....The resultant sludge reduction is achieved by having the bio mass totally and uniformly aerobic, top to bottom, providing the bacteria with sufficient oxygen to be completely aerobic. Aerobic action at the bottom is where the solids collect and the aerobic condition is very important for solids digestion. 4....The massive energy required to produce the compressed air for aeration is no longer required and more of the sludge is digested. 5....The Aerobic condition will reduce the BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) of a bio mass. |
|
Augmenting aeration with a lower dosage of BioMagic 500 allows the benefits of both technologies to improve the digestion of organic waste. Dosing an aerated Bio Mass will provide the additional oxygen to boost the aerobic digestion through out the Bio Mass and reduce the sludge production. Sludge reductions as high as 50% have been experienced when dosing with bio stimulants along with aeration. |

City of Honolulu
City of Honolulu
|
A head-to-head test was the order of the day for the city's Halekou Pump Station. The station had been using ferric chloride in an attempt to reduce hydrogen sulfide odors, but area residents' complaints continued. And the threat of corrosion damage from the ferric chloride was costly. A safe, non-corrosive and cost-effective answer came from our Bio Stimulant, BioMagic. |

Carlsbad
|
The city's Batiquitos Pump Station is adjacent to a 610 acre wetlands area. While the city was using other hydrogen sulfide control products at other pump stations, a pilot program was initiated at the Batiquitos Pump Station to see if liquid sulfides could be reduced consistently and cost-effectively. BioMagic was eager for the challenge. |

The South Coast Water District
|
The district's facilities are extensive: the sewer system contains 136 miles of pipelines, 3,800 manholes, 14 lift stations and three miles of force mains. Lift Station 9, located in an environmentally sensitive marina area, was in trouble with H2S levels above the force main discharge manhole literally toxic. An aggressive solution was imperative and BioMagic stepped in. |
